Entrevista con Los Stomias y nuevo disco

Los Stomias van a sacar en breve nuevo disco y como avance aquí publico una entrevista en SurfinMadrid con este magnífico grupo surf de Perú: Los Stomias , de Lima. Hemos hablado por email y esto es lo que me han contado: 

¿Quienes forman parte de Los Stomias? ¿Cuál es la historia de la banda?

Los Stomias son:

Eloy A. Calle G. (bajo y voz).
Toño Castillo (guitarra y coros).
Adrián Arguedas S. (baterÍa)

Camaradas: Diego García y Daniel Sotelo (órgano, piano y coros).

Los Stomias se forman en el verano del 2005 tras la disolución de la banda de rock psicodélico – Dr. Hérpedas – fundada por Eloy A. Calle G. y Toño Castillo en 1998; así, tras un periodo de separación entre los fundadores; Eloy A. Calle G. conoce a Adrián Arguedas quien era baterista de la banda peruana Leuzemia y que, por su gusto por bandas como The Ventures, The Trashmen y Los Belking’s, deciden realizar la grabación del álbum instrumental de surf ácido póstumo de la banda, el cual tuvo un final trágico y nunca salió a la luz; en ese lapso, se vuelven reunir con Toño Castillo por lo que surgieron nuevos temas y se pensó en hacer un proyecto sólo de estudio.

Así, viendo que la corriente del Garage se tornaba en algunos casos más por moda y se asociaba solo al punk decidimos salir con una propuesta revival basada en los 60s buscando dejar clara la brutalidad y espíritu de esa época.

Consideramos que muchos aspectos estaban confundidos en la escena por la difusión de mucha información musical y poco conocimiento de la época e ideologías; algunos relacionan el punk y el garaje sesentas como proto-punk cuando la temática es distinta, el sonido es distinto y creen que sólo porque es agresiva la manifestación sesentera y el sonido poco pulido o sucio ya es punk y eso consideramos una falta de respeto a dicha corriente y a lo que representaban los 60s, tecnológicamente limitada pero brillante y agresivo. Por ello, salimos a tocar pues todo era una mazamorra y no se le puede robar a los sesentas la brutalidad propia de su época o relacionarla con ideas posteriores, ya que si fuera así la cosa, podría decirse que cualquier corriente es ¨proto¨ de cualquiera por aspectos superficiales.

¿Cuáles son sus tres películas de horror favoritas?

EVIL DEAD, BRAIN DEAD, THEATRE OF BLOOD.

¿Cómo definirían su música?

Brutal Surf Instrumental y Garage-Enfermedad Sesentas.
¿Cuál es la receta para el sonido de Los Stomias? ¿Qué equipo, reverb y guitarras utilizan?

Hasta el momento hemos tratado de utilizar elementos de la época por el sonido y el valor que le damos a la cultura de los sesentas. Entre lo utilizado para nuestra primera grabación están: - cabezal y cabinet - marca FARFISA; Fuzztone EKO, Organo Farfisa Compact y piano eléctrico Wurlitzer. También guitarras y bajos de la época. No creemos mucho en lo digital pues somos algo primitivos y por ello tratamos de usar lo mínimo posible de esta ayuda.

¿Practican ustedes el surf también?

No, lastimosamente tabla no, pero si algo de natación y skateboard. La tabla es un deporte que nos gustaría aprender, al menos uno de la banda lo tiene que hacer pero si tenemos muchos amigos que gustan de la banda y hacen surf en playas limeñas.

¿Como ven el panorama Surf en Perú, y más concretamente en Lima, del pasado con grupos como Los Saicos y en el presente? ¿Qué futuro ven al surf rock instrumental en su país?

Creo que actualmente la corriente musical del surf está en pleno renacimiento pero aún en el Perú no llega a ser lo que fue en los sesentas. Antes habían un buen nivel en varias bandas y existían sellos que apoyaban a estas por ser buenos y no tanto por ser allegados o ahijados como es lo que pasa en estos días, donde se puede convertir a cualquier banda en los abanderados o lo mejor de una corriente, teniendo estas en muchos casos, poco nivel competitivo. Lo peor es que muchos de estos roban ideas a bandas underground y se hacen de creaciones copiadas sin merito alguno más que a su criollada.

La época vivida por bandas de los 60s era mucho más sincera e inocente, aunque sé que se fabricaban bandas y artistas pero no era tan descarado como ahora, al menos había creatividad. Los Saicos o los York’s, entre otros, son parte de ese grupo de músicos de barrio que fueron aceptados por un sello y grabaron en programas de televisión ganándose un lugar por merito propio. Hoy creo que la cosa es distinta pero aún hay gente que trabaja para buscar ideales distintos a tener fama.

Sobre el futuro del surf instrumental creo que hemos puesto una semilla en nuestro país para que surjan bandas que creen en el estilo y no sólo se hagan de un nombre a costa de usar guitarras vintage o de amigos en los medios. El rock and roll se hace con los huevos y no importa nada más que lo que hace en la grabación y en vivo. No hace falta vender la carne de chicas o vender tu conciencia, siendo complaciente con el público para que digan que eres bueno.

Sí. hay futuro en el Surf y esperamos que la gente sea más critica y no se acostumbre con lo que los medios dicen que es bueno, esa es una gran mentira pues muchos periodistas no saben nada de corrientes como el garaje y en medios más comerciales los periodistas recorren menos los lugares más marginales ó underground donde también hay propuestas alternas. En Perú cualquiera puede ser conocido si eres del entorno de quienes manejan los medios, hasta puedes ser presidente. Los medios son los principales creadores de ídolos de barro por interés y de gobiernos que apadrinan sus intereses.

¿Algún comentario sobre Internet como medio de promoción para estilos como el surf y posibilidades para darse a conocer por todo el mundo?

En principio nunca nos agradó mucho el internet en comparación a informarte de la manera clásica como comprar un vinilo, buscar artículos o encontrar a pulso cada cosa. La facilidad de información es algo que te da mucho pero sin fondo, no hay interés, ni de informarte del contexto ni de nada respecto a lo que escuchas. Es vacio y esa diferencia la podemos ver nosotros que vivimos esa época de comienzo y ausencia del internet.

Por otro lado, no podemos verlo de manera negativa totalmente pues antes de internet era difícil conseguir música rara, discos de bandas de garaje y ese privilegio lo tenían quienes tenían billete para conseguirlo, o tenían familia o viajaban, eso no ayudaba mucho a quienes no contaban con esas facilidades. Por ello, también se puede entender hoy que algunas bandas se hicieron famosas copiando pues no eran muy brillantes, pero tenían acceso a esa información. Hoy ya no es así y hay mayor igualdad, pero se ha perdido el respeto por lo que uno encontraba y el ritual de buscar música, salir a caminar, lo que te hacía valorar más tu corriente, estilo y era difícil verlo como moda o algo pasajero.

En ese sentido, en internet hay muchas propuestas para ver y facilidades para darse a conocer; así, en promoción ha ayudado pues buenas bandas sin muchos recursos pueden competir con cualquiera a igual y haciendo ahorro en la publicidad.

¿Alguna relación especial con bandas de Perú y de fuera?

En Perú Los Stomias tienen muy buena relación con muchas bandas y amigos músicos que no necesariamente son de la misma corriente musical pero que identifican nuestra propuesta como elemento importante en la escena; por otro lado, hablando de la corriente revival si tenemos una buena relación y respeto por el trabajo de varias bandas de Surf y Garage 60s como: Zorros Petardos Salvajes, Mermen, Frenéticos, Os Beach Combers, Frenéticos, Los Ultraman, The Long Boards, entre otras bandas amigas en diferentes países del mundo.

¿Pensáis que el surf rock está de moda? ¿Cuáles son los mayores retos y dificultades con que se encuentra actualmente el rock instrumental en su opinión? 

Sí. creo que está de moda para los que no saben nada de los 60s y es una corriente más del rock para los que la cultivan de manera sincera como el metal, rock and roll 50s, ska, reggae, progresivo, psicodelia 60s, punk, pop. Etc. Considero que es un buen momento para esta corriente y que ante tanto uso de lo digital, la gente busca lo esencial y amateur, como siempre fue.
¿Proyectos presentes y futuros de Los Stomias? ¿Más nuevos videos próximamente, como Rey Pistón? ¿Alguna posibilidad de concierto por España en el futuro cercano?

Se está trabajando en el segundo material de la banda y próximamente saldrá un recopilatorio internacional de Surf Garage y Rockabilly en Argentina y Mexico con los amigos de Paranoia Tiki. Junto a ello, se relanzara nuestra web y esperamos lanzar nuevos videos, creo que lo más próximo son aquellos que documentan los conciertos y que han sido grabados por el público que nos los están haciendo llegar. Claro que seguidamente se piensa lanzar más videos nuestros de temas nuevos, ya el - Rey Pistón - debe ser destronado!!

Junto a ello, estaremos participando en la proyección de la Película “Saicomanía” – Documental sobre Los Saicos - que seguro será estrenado en España y el cual recomendamos pues es una iniciativa de amigos peruanos.

Por otro lado, la posibilidad de viajar a España está ahí, depende de los productores, sellos y el público. Tenemos muchos amigos españoles que gustan de nuestra música y de hecho que serán felices si algún sello nos convoca en sus lanzamientos para vuestro país y se organiza algo con nosotros, seria de puta madre!!. Creemos en la herencia Inca y del Rock and Roll de los sesentas peruano, brutalidad y salvajismo que llevamos en la sangre y que esperamos poder compartir pronto con ustedes.

I'm a Hog for You Baby, de The Coasters, en realidad un grupo de rockandroll. Esta canción es famosa en el surf por su versión de The Surfaris.

Surfin' Bird, muy conocida, puro propunk y versioneada por Los Ramones y The Cramps.

Surf City, de Jan & Dean, grupo a lo Beach Boy, con un simpático videoclip traido directamente de los sesenta (1963). De hecho la letra está escrita por Brian Wilson, uno de los Beach Boys.
